Alternate Shot:
PRT -- Pine Ridge Tattler
Associated Press: They got it all wrong. It began with the weatherman who predicted showers and afternoon rain. Wrong. The Vegas bookmakers had the Europeans 2 – 1 favourites to win day one alternate shot. Wrong. Check your Ridger Cup draw sheet. It’s dated Thursday, June 11th. Wrong. The only thing that went right on day one was Captain Vogelsang’s lineup that he hoped would give him the quick start he was looking for. “I knew we needed to get out of the blocks fast and put the Europeans on their back foot. It worked today but I know a lot of those guys hit it pretty good off their back foot. They’ll be firing at flags come Friday. We’ll have to be on our toes to hold this lead.”
Match Analysis:
Match 1
Vogelsang/Teplitski vs Aronec/Braun
KC and the Sunshine Band
Karl and Carl were humming “Ain’t no sunshine when you’re gone.” and this one was gone from the first hole. K & C made par from the bush on #1, were 2 under after four and ran away with this one 6 and 4. Gord and John were magnanimous in their summation of the match: “We could have shook hands after four and saved everyone some time.”
Match 2
Kinley/Puhach vs Hetherington/Butler
Euros Spark a Victory
The road to victory took a circuitous route down a cartpath. With neither side giving an inch, Fred chipped from the gravel on #9 and when the sparks had cleared, Rick made the putt to go three up. Canadians thought they would be only one down after nine but the turnaround could not be overcome and this one ended 2 and 1. Both captains set the tone early with victories for their respective teams.
Match 3
Bale/Thompson vs Olinkin/McRedmond
Two Lefties leave Euros Reeling
Captain Karl pulled out all stops and threw a duo of lefties at two righties and it wasn’t even close. Confused from the get-go, the Euros could be heard mumbling: “I sometimes chip out of the bush from the left but these guys hit everything from that side, and straight. What’s up with that?” Dog Tagged 7 and 6.
Match 4
Stastook/Fallis vs Prystayko/Mitchell
Home on the Range
A steady Stastook and a range finding Fallis zeroed in on their opponents for a hard fought victory. Word at the club is that Bob used his Bushnell on #2 to help make the forty foot snake that set the tone for the rest of the match. Two up after nine, they never looked back and closed the match on # 15 four up.
Match 5
Duncan/Harrison vs Pare/Rasmussen
It’s a plane, it’s a bird, it’s an eagle
Hole number two turned out to be pivotal in this match as well. Giving up 7 stroke holes, the Canadians would have to come out of the gate fast. And they did. Harrison holed out from fifty yards on #2 and the romp was on. Joe and Ed hung in but the hole kept getting in the way of the Canadian ball and this one ended early 5 and 4.
Match 6
Denboer/Bellemare vs Loewen/Manchulenko
Euros March Along to Victory
One of the most exciting matches of the night. It looked like a cakewalk when both teams parred #9 leaving the Euros 3 up coming home. Henk and Andre kept hanging in and took it to 17 before Darryl hit a laser to the middle of the green and closed it out 3 and 1. Not a single match made it to the eighteenth green.
Day 1 results: Canadians 4 Europeans 2
